The prolific Piedmontese sculptor Pietro Canonica executed public works for individuals and governments from different parts of the world: from the statue of the last Russian emperor, Nikolai Alexandrovich Romanov (destroyed during the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917-1918), the statue of Queen Victoria at Buckingham Palace, and two monuments in honor of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, father of the modern Turkish nation, to the statue representing the Columbian patriot Simon Bolivar, and the funerary monument for the Argentine President José Figueroa Alcorta in Buenos Aires. The tender, intimate relief of the Madonna and Child belongs to works made for the private sphere in which a quiet, contemplative mood prevails over more dramatic works. Clearly inspired by low reliefs of the same subject prevalent in Renaissance Italy, in this high relief Canonica challenges himself and historical precedents by creating a psychologically and physically convincing interaction between mother and son, as the image emerges almost three-dimensionally from the background.
Il fecondo scultore piemontese, Pietro Canonica, eseguì opere per committenti privati e statali di diverse nazioni, come la statua dell'ultimo imperatore russo, Nikolaj Aleksandrovič Romanov (distrutta durante la Rivoluzione Bolscevica del 1917-1918), la statua della Regina Vittoria a Buckingham Palace, i due monumenti in onore di Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, padre della moderna nazione turca, una statua del patriota colombiano Simon Bolivar, e il monumento funebre per il presidente argentino José Figueroa Alcorta a Buenos Aires. Il dolce, intimo rilievo della Madonna e Bambino fu eseguito per la sfera privata nel quale un sentimento silenzioso e contemplativo prevale sulle opere più drammatiche. Chiaramente ispirato ai bassorilievi dello stesso soggetto prevalenti nel Rinascimento italiano, in questo altorilievo il Canonica si confrontò con se stesso e gli artisti che lo precedettero creando una convincente interazione psicologica e fisica tra madre e figlio, con una immagine che emerge quasi tridimensionalmente dallo sfondo.
