Extinct is an ode to our rapidly vanishing natural world. Just as photographs are vulnerable to fading, the species that once thrived around us are quietly disappearing, often without notice. The delicate chemical process of analogue photography reflects the fragility of both memory and existence. Each image in this series carries the trace of its making. Edges dissolve, flaws remain, and the medium itself begins to vanish, just like the subjects it portrays.
As analogue photography is increasingly replaced by digital, and as wild ecosystems are confined or destroyed, we must ask ourselves if we are also changing the essence of what it means to be human. Our identities—our courage, strength, and sense of belonging—have been shaped through our connection to other species and the natural world. What becomes of bravery without the lion? Power without the elephant? History without physical evidence? With each loss, we surrender a part of who we are.
Will photographs be the only remaining record of our primordial past, or can we still choose to protect the fragile environment that sustains us all?
