The Fountain of the Goddess Roma was inaugurated in 2003 in Piazza Monte Grappa, in the Della Vittoria neighborhood. It is one of many works executed by the Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj that pays homage to the city's classical heritage. Typical of this artist's oeuvre are sculptures that reference the fragmentary nature of most Greek and Roman statuary that have come down through the ages. By emulating ancient artifacts in their fragmentary form — often displaying cracks or bandages that are a reminder of the passage of time and the fragility of the human condition — Mitoraj has, perhaps inadvertently, succeeded in following Johann Joachim Winckelmann's advice to Neoclassical artists: "The only way for us to become great or, if this be possible, inimitable, is to imitate the ancients."
La Fontana della Dea Roma venne inaugurata nel 2003 in Piazza Monte Grappa, nel quartiere Della Vittoria. È una delle molte opere eseguite dallo scultore polacco Igor Mitoraj che rende omaggio al retaggio classico della città. Tipico delle opere di questo artista sono sculture che fanno eco all'aspetto frammentario della maggior parte delle statue greche e romane che ci sono giunte attraverso i secoli. Emulando le opere classiche nel loro aspetto lacunoso — spesso mostrando fratture o bende che rammentano il passaggio del tempo e la fragilità della condizione umana — Mitoraj è riuscito, forse inconsapevolmente, a seguire il consiglio che Johann Joachim Winckelmann diede agli artisti neoclassici: "L'unica via, per noi, per diventare grandi e, se possibile, inimitabili, è l'imitazione degli antichi."
